Shocking
In the early 1960s, Yale University psychologist Stanley Milgram shocked America when he demonstrated that ordinary people will commit acts of violence that conflict with their personal conscience and moral convictions if instructed to do so by an authority figure.

A replication of that famous experiment is uncovering some of the same findings and controversy. In the original experiment, Milgram asked ordinary people to administer painful -- and in some cases, even fatal -- shocks to other people posing as research subjects. The maximum voltage they could administer was 450 volts -- enough to cause permanent damage or even death to the study subject.

In reality, the "research subjects" were not receiving any shock. But the act of inflicting harm on another individual was still very much real to the people administering the voltage. Although many of the participants that were asked to administer shocks expressed hesitation or even gently refused to continue going on with the experiment, Milgram found that about two-thirds of all the participants completed the study and administered the full 450 volts of shock.

Jerry Burger, lead investigator of the new study and a professor of psychology at Santa Clara University, said that his modified version of the study came to a similar conclusion: About 70 percent of the participants continued administering shock until they reached the highest voltage point.

Question: How far are you willing to go to follow the crowd? How much influence do you think your peers have on you? If you think not, you will be wrong 70% of the time.... Think about it.

God has called his people to stand up and be different from the world. Are you? Am I? Will we?

eNews - What's Happening in Vancouver?!

Welcome to the Adventist Community Church eNews 2010-06-08
Small but
powerful

When my daughter was young, she loved to each hot food - like her dad. One year, Gail grabbed some half-price peppers to grow in our garden, thinking they were bell peppers.... NOT! We didn't know what kind of peppers they were but my daughter was willing to try anything.

One bite, almost immediate tears and a mad-dash to the kitchen sink proved that small things can have a big impact.

Think about that for a moment.... What small things have had an impact on your life? For me, some of them have been:
    1. A kind word of encouragement - spoken almost at random to me.
    2. An unkind word of complaint of gossip - ouch!
    3. A Cookie, a Snack, a small treat
    4. A quick look away to my phone while I drove - nearly crashing.... Hmmm...
    5. My daily time in the LIFE Journal - it's small, but it has grown very big in my life.

What's wasting your "space" when it comes to having time in your day for personal devotions? Is it TV, RSS Feeds, Facebook, email, the phone? Is it time to put them aside so you can learn to grow in the space of time God has give us?
Read the Slow burner article. Slow burner
In order to have a thriving, growing personal relationship with God - takes time. This time, the slow guys win - those who are willing to put the time in regularly and travel slowly, but consistently. Take it easy, there's no rush, but just keep going....

Community Group News

Currently, we have about 150 people in a Community Group. If you are one of those people - you are to be commended, because a life lived with a small group of believers, in community, is a life better lived. But if you aren't - it may be time to join up.

Our goal is to have over 350 people in a Community Group within in the next few years. It's where life change happens best, where congregational care happens at the highest level, and where you build life-long friendships. Talk to Pastor Jeff or Wayne Blakely for more information.

Today in Vancouver!

Tuesday, April 27, 2010

The Mission of the Adventist Community Church is to Reach Deep in Discipleship, Reach Out in Evangelism and Reach Up in Worship.

Sticky Church!

Friday night of last week, we saw 28 people become part of our church.  On Sabbath we had three more join (two actually from the seminar).  But it was an exciting evening as these people took their individual stand for the Lord, for truth, and to become part of us.

Now, the work begins for us - they have been given the truth of the Bible.  They will continue to receive that truth in the Daniel Class, in the Bible Marking Class.  But will we bring them into our relational circles?  Will we bring them in to our lives?

Statistically, after a person becomes a member of a church, if they don't make 7 close friends within the first year, they won't stick.  We want to create a "Sticky Church."

Here are some ideas how you can help these people stick....
  • Invite them over for a Sabbath lunch
  • Invite them out to eat
  • Call them on the phone
  • sit by them at the potlucks
  • take them on a hike
  • help them around their house
  • Get them involved with your ministry at church
  • Invite them to join your Community Group
  • Sit by them in Sabbath School
  • Sit by them in church
  • Invite them to a party
  • Introduce them to others
  • ....many more ways....

Kisii Africa Adventure!

An opportunity has arisen to preach the word to our friends in Kisii, Kenya.  Through the Share Him organization, the Vancouver SDA church has chosen to undertake a challenge that will be both spiritually fulfilling  and life changing, not only for those we seek to preach to, but for ourselves as well.  Our mission will begin August 11, 2010 and continue through the 29th.  Our challenge is to provide a life saving message to the people of Kisii, and to draw more people into the Kingdom.  Our immediate challenge is funds.  There are a few people who would like to participate, but have no funds to do so.  We would appeal to you, our church family and friends, to pray about what you can do to help make this mission succeed.  Your donation of time, money and prayers would be most appreciated.  We cannot be successful without your help.  So please, take a moment and determine how you can make this trip a success, not only for those wishing to preach and participate, but also to those we wish to preach to.  It's time to change lives….

Get your praise on!! 31 people!!

Friday night (and a couple on Sabbath) we will have a baptism
celebration like never before. There will be 8 people joining by
profession of faith and 23 baptisms! Who says God isn't on the move?
Wow! Who says this only happens in Africa? Come on! God is still on
his throne!!!

Plan to be there on Friday night for a great time of celebration and
joy - 7:30 pm.

And pray that these will continue to not be discouraged between now
and Friday. And pray for the few that are still considering making a
decision.

See you Friday night!

Make a difference!

Today in Vancouver!

Tuesday, April 20, 2010

The Mission of the Adventist Community Church is to Reach Deep in Discipleship, Reach Out in Evangelism and Reach Up in Worship.

Friday Night Baptism!

Some have said it could never happen.  Others have said this kind of thing only happens in Africa or South America.  But in the last few weeks we've seen that evangelism isn't dead in North America, not dead in Vancouver!  Not anywhere!  God is still in the business of changing hearts.

Richard has done a great job of preaching the message of Jesus.  He's made it clear every night that this isn't about doctrines, but about having a personal relationship with Jesus.

Friday night we're having a baptism.  It's going to be a big baptism - we're borrowing robes from several area churches to make sure we have enough.  And we'll have a better count as to how many that will be by Wednesday night's baptismal class.  It's exciting to see so many make decisions, isn't it?!

Please pray for these people who are in the throes of decision making.  We have some new people ready to make that decision, but are on the verge of not making them also....

Please also begin to invite these people to your homes to show them what it means to keep the Sabbath, to give them a good meal and help them make friends within our congregation.

Oh!  And has anyone said lately that we're having a baptism on Friday night??!!  Hope you'll come and support these new people.

I love being your pastor!

TV Station Update!

The FCC approved the sale transfer of the Portland television station and Better Life Broadcasting should have the broadcast license by May 10, 2010.  Their hope and goal is to be on the air with Better Life Broadcasting Network's programming by the end of June, 2010.

Two million potential viewers in the greater Portland and Vancouver area will have the opportunity to hear the Message of the Gospel 24 hours a day, 7 days a week right in the comfort of their home. Awesome!
