February 22, 2011

From Pastor Roger ...

A friend shared this story with me:
Watching Susie interact with the geese yesterday was very enlightening. Everything she did seemed to scare them away, even though in her three-year-old mind, they were designed to attract them to her. She would throw food then wave frantically trying to show them where the cracker was – they ran away. She would run screaming toward them to "greet" them, but they ran away. She would slap her leg or clap her hands to call them – they ran away.

Reading this reminded me of all the ways we try to get people to come to church. But perhaps the best way we can win the world to Christ is learn to listen first – seek first to understand. Learn their language, learn their methods, learn their culture then speak to them about the grace of God in the midst of their culture, their methods, and their language.

Christ's method alone will give true success in reaching the people. The Saviour mingled with men as one who desired their good. He showed His sympathy for them, ministered to their needs, and won their confidence. Then He bade them, "Follow Me."

There is need of coming close to the people by personal effort…. "The poor are to be relieved, the sick cared for, the sorrowing and bereaved comforted, the ignorant instructed, the inexperienced counseled. We are to weep with those that weep, and rejoice with those that rejoice. Accompanied by the power of persuasion, the power of prayer, the power of the love of God, this work will not, cannot, be without fruit."
Ministry of Healing, p. 144

A Sad Farewell

By now, many of you will have heard already for our prayers for the Kroschell and Wilson families from an earlier email. Everyone still needs your prayers for support and healing, although there was one significant loss in the accident. See Below....

God Bless!

Subject: A Sad Farewell

As most of you know, the Kroschel and Wilson families met with a tragic accident Sabbath afternoon on the way to La Pine for the second concert of the day with the Salem Adventist Men's Chorus.

It is with great pain and sadness that I report we have lost our beloved brother, Herb Kroschel. At the request of the family and on the recommendation of the medical staff, his life support was removed earlier today.

You will all want to know how the others are doing.

Peggy is grateful for your continued prayers and support.  She had an injury to her back. The doctors performed surgery to stabilize it and were pleased with the results.

Pierce has a broken arm and Harrison is under observation for a bruised spleen. The doctors are confident of their recovery.

Leland, Tami and Trent were released from the hospital late Saturday night and are all experiencing significant muscular-skeletal pain and discomfort.

My heart is very heavy tonight. I trust God to show us the light, and as He does, I am prepared to stay the course.

Lou

Prayer Requests, Please!

Two prayer Requests:

Ben and Pat Wolfswinkel's daughter, son-in-law and two grandwons were in an accident when traveling with the Oregon Men's Chorus to La Pine and all were injured. The boys and daughter are fine, the son-in-law is in critical condition and unconscious. Please pray for Herb and that the doctors will have wisdom. Evidently someone coming the opposite direction lost control of their car and hit them broad side and ended up hitting the car behind them (also with the Men's Chorus) head on. No information about the other people, but please pray for all involved.

Also pray for Fred Thomas' mom who was admitted to the hospital this morning about the time church was going to start. Don't know any details, but sound serious.

Make a Difference!

Community Groups

One of the things we're always looking for is follow-up for our evangelistic seminars. The best way we know how to do that, is by starting Community Groups. The kind of groups we're looking to start immediately following our Spring Seminar is simple: 1) Show a 15-20 minute long DVD, 2) facilitate a discussion about those groups with a list of questions pre-arranged to start with, 3) pray together as a group. We're looking for 5 leaders of these groups. If you are interested in doing this, please contact Pastors Jeff or Roger and they will be glad to help you get it started at the end of April.

From Pastor Roger...

David Allen (not ours, not the Oregon Conference's, but the guy who wrote the book "Getting Things Done") once said, "You are disorganized if you need something somewhere that you don't have or have something somewhere that you don't need."

Well, that's a pretty all encompassing statement, don't you think. You don't know where something is, but you do know where "this" is and you don't need it.

What about your knowledge of the scriptures? Are you getting useful, applicable information from the Bible, or is it just information? The goal of the LIFE Journal is that you would read SCRIPTURE, OBSERVE scripture, APPLY that scripture, and PRAY about that scripture and application. SOAP. That's putting things where they need to be. That's putting things in their place into a useful manner and a useful system….

Thank-you so much for all the prayers for my friend Wiley. Unfortunately, his injuries were too severe for him to overcome and he passed away this morning. Please do continue to keep his family in your prayers. I can't imagine what they must be going through, but I know that God will comfort, and He will continue to give them strength and courage. Thank you so much.

My brother and I had an Academy classmate that was involved in an explosion at a chemical plant that he works for in Gallatin, TN (about 30+ miles NE of Nashville)  90-95% of his body was burned.  His life is being sustained with a ventilator. He is alert and responsive although he can't speak yet. His 1st surgery is this morning. There is a 30% survival rate as of last night. He is married and has one son, 3 sisters and his mom and dad are still living.  His name is Wiley Sherburne.  They are begging for prayers.  THANK YOU!!!

Reminder: Oregon Conference town Hall meeting, Tuesday, Feb. 1, 7 pm, at the Vancouver Community Adventist church.

Community Church news: We are so sad to report the death of Johnnie Brown. Her service was yesterday, Monday, Jan. 31. While our hearts and prayers go out to Margaret and the rest of Johnnie's family, we rejoice in the promise of the resurrection.

From Pastor Roger...

There is an old proverb that goes like this:
It has been said that to find true joy, one must ingest a thousand rose petals, housebreak a camel, and scale the world's largest boulder.

Jesus said, "make my joy complete by being of the same mind, maintaining the same love, united in spirit, intent on one purpose." Phil 2:2 NASB

Our joy is found best when we take a look at living the way Jesus wants us to live and walking in obedience to His love.
